迄今所发现最古老的大熊猫成员是始熊猫，其化石出土于中国云南禄丰市和元谋，地质年代约为800万年前中新世晚期，和其同时代的动物由于地质与气候的强烈变化相继灭绝，而大熊猫在恶劣的自然环境中生存下来，并保持了原有的古老特征，从而成为世界上为数不多的动物“活化石”，也被誉为“中国国宝”，更是国家一级保护动物。
